Hurricane Agnes: Photographs from the Library of Virginia

Hurricane Agnes: Photographs from the Library of Virginia

Visit the Library this month to view a display of images from our collection that show the aftermath of Hurricane Agnes in honor of the monster storm’s 50th anniversary. Agnes was the costliest hurricane to hit the United States when it made landfall in June 1972, causing an estimated $2.1 billion in damages along the Southeastern U.S. coast and 13 deaths in Virginia alone. Richmond recorded a flood height of 36.5 feet along a 200-block area of downtown—the worst flooding since 1771.

Image shown is from Valley Street in Scottsville, Virginia during Hurricane Agnes. To see more images from this event, visit the Library's Flickr album on Hurricane Agnes.
