SUMMARY:Weinstein Author Series – Karin Wulf | Lineage
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT\n\nJoin us for a free talk by author
Karin Wulf on her new book “Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of
Connection in Early America.” Written from deep research across
18th-century British America\, the book examines how we understand the role
of genealogy then\, and its impact now.\n\nGenealogy is everywhere —
online\, on screens and through organizations and conferences and more.
Technologies aside\, genealogy was everywhere in the 18th century\, too.
And while we may think of 18th-century Americans as largely the subject of
genealogy research\, they were active participants in what was a
foundational interest and practice in their own time. Family histories were
deeply meaningful for diverse early Americans\, baked into the very
structures of their society through law\, politics and religion.\n\nWulf is
the director and librarian of the John Carter Brown Library and professor
of history at Brown University. A historian of early America focused on
gender\, family and politics\, she writes widely for both public and
academic audiences about history\, the worlds of research and scholarship\,
and libraries and archives. She serves on a variety of non-profit boards\,
is involved in planning for the semiquincentennial in July 2026 and is a
vice-president of the American Historical Association.\n\nA book signing
will follow the program. This book will be available at the Virginia
Shop.\n\nThis is a free event\, but registration is required. Seating in
the Lecture Hall is available on a first come\, first served basis. Limited
free parking is available in the deck underneath the Library at 800 East
Broad Street. For more information\, contact
education@lva.virginia.gov.\n\nThis event is part of the Library’s
programming commemorating Virginia's role in the 250th anniversary of
American independence. It is also part of the Carole Weinstein Author
Series which supports the literary arts by bringing both new and well-known
authors to the Library of Virginia through online or in-person events. Free
and open to the public\, the series focuses on Virginia authors and
 Virginia subjects across all genres.\n\n
