In response to significant changes to the built environment, the 1965 Richmond Esthetic Survey and Historic Buildings Survey sought to capture different parts of Richmond as they then existed. The associated photographs invite us to reflect on the social, cultural, and economic factors that gave rise to further changes in the ensuing 60 years.

Representing Roanoke in Congress through the Great Depression and World War II, Clifton A. Woodrum (1887-1950) secured federal funding for the region’s airport. His daughter Martha Woodrum Zillhardt (1916-2002) was a pioneer of women in aviation who operated a flight school and charter service.
