Intermediate Genealogy Workshop | Finding Women
Library of Virginia senior reference archivist Cara Griggs will provide an overview of researching women in Virginia from the settlement at Jamestown to when women received the right to vote in 1920. This workshop considers the unique challenges of finding information about women in records that often focus on men, as well as laws that pertained solely to women.
Types of records covered include those kept by local courts such as deeds, wills, free registers and lists of voters; state records including those of the Auditor of Public Accounts, the State Corporation Commission and the Bureau of Vital Statistics; federal records such as census schedules and records pertaining to immigration and naturalization; military records kept at the state and federal levels; and non-public records such as registers kept by religious institutions and business ledgers.
Limited free parking is available underneath the Library at 800 East Broad Street. For more information, contact Anne McCrery at anne.mccrery@lva.virginia.gov or 804.692.3568.
