Genealogy Workshop | More Than Just a Pretty Picture: Maps & Research at the Library of Virginia
Senior map archivist Cassandra Farrell will discuss why maps are critical to genealogical research, the information they can provide, the types of symbols used, and a strategy for determining which maps to consult in your research.
Learn how to read and analyze materials such as military maps, topographic maps, and nautical and U.S. Coast Survey charts. Explore government-issued materials such as city and county maps, aeronautical charts, highway maps, and postal route maps, as well as Sanborn Fire Insurance maps and emigrant, traveler and railroad maps. A map analysis worksheet and a list of suggested map libraries will be provided. The workshop will conclude with a tour of the Library’s current exhibition, “Mapping the Commonwealth, 1816–1826.” No experience necessary.
Limited free parking is available underneath the Library at 800 East Broad Street. For more information, contact Anne McCrery at anne.mccrery@lva.virginia.gov or 804.692.3568.
